The presiding officer in a stake is known as the stake president. The president is assisted by two counselors and the three together form a stake presidency. The stake presidency is assisted in turn by a twelve-member body, called the stake high council.
A stake president is a man who is asked to serve as a volunteer in this position. He oversees Church programs in a defined geographic area composed of individual congregations called wards and is responsible to help the members of his stake in their efforts to follow Jesus Christ.
Re: Who is the Stake President
You can find the bishop for your address by going to maps.lds.org. If you are a member of that ward, and your MRN is attached to your LDS Account, you can find your stake president in lds.org/directory or LDS Tools.

Stake conference is a meeting with the members of a stake and is intended to strengthen testimonies and conduct business within the stake. Each stake generally holds two stake conferences during the year as scheduled by the President of the Quorum of the Twelve.
- Calls the man by his full name.
- States that he is acting by the authority of the Melchizedek Priesthood.
- Ordains the man a bishop (unless he was previously ordained).
Stake conferences are under the direction of the President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, who calls for the conference and assigns the dates and the presiding leader, as well as an accompanying authority for the pair of leaders needed when stake presidencies are reorganized.
We now have 2,550 stakes in the Church, with more approved for organization. The president of the stake is the officer called under revelation to stand between the bishops of wards and the General Authorities of the Church. It is a most important responsibility.
The average age of a new stake president last year was 46.6 years old.
There are usually 5 to 12 wards and branches in a stake. In areas where the Church is new, members are organized into districts instead of stakes.
A ward is a local congregation in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church)--with a smaller local congregation known as a branch. A ward is presided over by a bishop, the equivalent of a pastor in many other Christian denominations.

Chosen by inspiration, they are most diligent in the pursuit of their duties. They are men of ability. They are men well schooled in the doctrines and practices of the Church. They are men of great faith.
A stake president is called and set apart by an assigned General Authority or Area Seventy (see 30.8. 3). He may be an elder or a high priest. A stake president must be a high priest.
The stake presidency recommends brethren to be called or released as bishops. Recommendations are submitted to the First Presidency through Leader and Clerk Resources (LCR). A member of the stake presidency, a clerk, or the executive secretary may prepare the recommendation.
